Sarasota, FL – WEVA International announced the winners of its 21st Annual Creative Excellence Awards Competition, live online, during WEVA Expo 2011, The Digital Imaging Supershow. Michael Rendulic, owner of Port Coquitlam based AVinhouse, was awarded the Bronze Creative Excellence Award in the Wedding Movie Trailer category.

While most of the fifteen categories were judged entirely by a peer panel of accredited Merited Professional Videographers, the Wedding Movie Trailer category was ultimately decided by online votes. An initial group of six finalists were chosen by the MPV accredited panel and Expo conference attendees and professional bridal consultants determined the winners through online voting.

Rendulic, who serves locally as an executive member for the BC Professional Videographers Association, only joined WEVA three months prior to the competition but quickly demonstrated that his work is on par with the industry’s top international talents. Because the finalist videos did not display the entrant company names, Rendulic only found out he was a finalist when he was viewing and voting for his own selections.

“When I saw one of my wedding trailers on the top six I didn’t believe what I was seeing. I kept refreshing my browser over and over just to make sure it was real,” remarked Rendulic, who kept refreshing the online conference browser window hours beyond the conference’s 6 PM close, until the winners were finally announced online, well past midnight on the 27th. “I couldn’t sleep because I was so excited and nervous. The WEVA CEA is the most prestigious event video award and to be recognized by my peers as having produced one of the best videos is truly an honour.”

The Wedding Movie Trailer Rendulic was recognized for was from Anita and Marko Mrsic’s wedding, which he filmed on July 9, 2011, at the Heart of Mary Croatian Roman Catholic Church, the Croatian Cultural Centre, and downtown Vancouver. The wedding movie trailer is a teaser highlight of a wedding video, released prior to the wedding video completion.

AVinhouse Event Videography is a professional video production company that produces family heirloom videos, event tribute videos (birthdays, weddings, documentaries, anniversaries & memorials), and corporate event videos.

The video production industry is very excited about the 2011 BCPVA Video Innovation Awards.

Here are just a few international websites who have covered the news. The list includes sites from Japan, Australia, & USA.

Sony Australia

NEX-FS100P 2011 Wins VIA Award at NAB 2011.

The British Columbia Professional Videographers Association presented Sony with the 2011 BCPVA Video Innovation Award for the NEX-FS100P.

The 2011 BCPVA VIA was presented to Jeff Ibbotson, Senior Vice President, Professional Solutions Group, by BCPVA delegate Shawn Lam, at NAB 2011.

The NEX-FS100P is a super 35 sensor interchangeable lens HD video camera with professional XLR audio inputs. The super 35 sensor allows the FS100 to attain superior low light sensitivity and a sought-after bokeh, or defocus. The FS100 improves on the problems that DSLR camera operators have been limited by, including moire, aliasing, rolling shutter, 12 minute record limits, lack of data-display-less HDMI record out, and egonomics.

The British Columbia Videographers Association is Canada’s largest non-profit professional video association and its members specialise in event, corporate, and wedding videography.

Blackmagic Design’s ATEM Television Studio Wins BCPVA Video Innovation Award
Milpitas, CA – May 18, 2011 – Blackmagic Design today announced that ATEM Television Studio is the recipient of a BCPVA Video Innovation Award, presented by the British Columbia Professional Videographers Association at the 2011 NAB Show.

The British Columbia Videographers Association is Canada’s largest non-profit professional video association. The BCPVA Video Innovation Award was awarded to companies that have released revolutionary new products for corporate and event video producers. Award recipients are judged according to the features, performance, innovation, uniqueness and value offered by their new product.

“The Blackmagic Design ATEM Television Studio is a game-changer in the video production switcher market,” said Shawn Lam, BCPVA delegate and former president. ”This powerful 6 input HDMI and HD to SDI switcher has the value proposition of a switcher costing thousands more, which is impressive considering its price of less than a thousand dollars.”

“It is an honor to win the BCPVA award. ATEM Television Studio is an amazing switcher that’s broadcast quality, and with it’s HDMI connections, H.264 encoding, and affordable price, it’s going to help so many new people experience the excitement of live production for the first time. These new HD consumer cameras are amazing quality, and look great, and then as the customers grow, they can start plugging in higher end SDI cameras for greater cable distances and quality,” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design. “Then within minutes of an event being complete, the H.264 files can be online for the world to see. It’s an amazing solution!”

The BCPVA VIA award is proudly displayed here, on Blackmagic’s website.

Atomos (Australia)

Atomos’ spectacular first NAB

We surprised a few people when we arrived at NAB with a large booth, a platoon of employees and some of the hottest cameras in the show, all linked up and working with Ninjas.

Atomos was started by just two visionary guys, Ian and Jeromy, but it’s grown to have offices in three continents, a massively experienced workforce and a world-wide distribution network.

So we wanted to make a splash at NAB 2011, and that’s exactly what we did, winning a MARIO Award from TV Technology, a Broadcasting Engineering Pick Hit award and the 2011 BCPVA Video Innovation Award.

Here’s an interesting bit of information: did you know that since Apple brought out their newest iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch operating system IOS v.4 there is now a file on your device that logs in detail everywhere you’ve been? Apple says it uses the information to better tailor your “user experience” by targeting you with advertising based on the places you frequent. The information gets transferred to your home computer every time you sync your device, which in turn “may or may not” be sent to Apple. Okay, so that’s fine as long as Apple doesn’t sell your information to other companies. However, the big issue people are talking about is that this info on your iPhone or iPad is not encrypted in any way. If you lose your device or it’s stolen it’s very easy for your personal information to be harvested. I don’t need to tell you how the information might be used that doesn’t have your best interests at heart.

There are ways to delete this info before it gets sent anywhere but you have to have some knowledge of IOS v.4 in order to do it. In the meantime there is this handy little open-source desktop app. that you can use to see on a regular map where you’ve been lately. Thanks to Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden who wrote the iPhone Tracker. You can download the software here and while you’re there read up on why it’s important to know these things about your device.

- Don

The British Columbia Professional Videographers Association is proud to present K-Tek with the 2011 BCPVA Video Innovation Award for the Norbert Sport.

The 2011 BCPVA VIA was presented to Brenda Parker, President K-Tek, by BCPVA delegate Shawn Lam, at NAB 2011.

K-Tek’s Norbert Camera Mounting System is a rock-solid foundation for the latest generation of video-capable DSLRs and compact high-definition video cameras. The flexible Norbert system has mounting options for both tripod and handheld use. Its lightweight machined-aluminum base frame can be used to mount a variety of production tools, including:

external viewfinders and monitors

strobe/flash

continuous light sources

audio recorders

video recorders

microphones

The Norbert Sport uses foam covered extendable graphite handes on the side of the frame to make shooting action video and extreme sports much easier. There is also a handle that mounts on the top for easy transitioning from an upper hand held perspective to a lower to the ground perspective.
