Here are a few FCS3 tutorials that I’ve found for those wanting to expand their understanding of these programs. For anyone who’s serious about their craft, you have below several “must watch” videos that will make you sit back and say “Cool. I didn’t know you could do that!”

The first one briefly touches on the Log and Transfer section of FCP and how it relates to today’s tapeless workflows. But mostly the tutorial is all about “online/offline” workflows using the ProRes Proxy codec that allows you to use far less room on your media drives during the edit process. ProRes 422 (proxy) is also a full raster codec, meaning if you shot in 1920×1080 your proxy files will also be the same size. This is very important if your project has a lot of graphics/pictures because you won’t have to redo any FX or moves when it’s time to re-capture at the online resolution.

http://library.creativecow.net/articles/ross_shane/tapeless_online/video-tutorial

The second one is all about tapeless workflows using the Log and Transfer section of FCP7. Canon 5D, 7D and the new 550D users take note: this tutorial was made for you.

http://library.creativecow.net/articles/ross_shane/tapeless-workflow_fcp-7/video-tutorial

The next one is about easily adding BITC (burn-in time code) to your video using Compressor. This is important if you’re working with clients or co-workers such as the audio guy who’s going to sweeten the tracks of your documentary masterpiece. You need to be able to reference your video with everyone using the language of TC as your project progresses.

http://library.creativecow.net/articles/ross_shane/visible-timecode/video-tutorial

How about an easy way to make beautiful slow-motion with none other than Cinema Tools, which is part of Final Cut Studio. Check it out:

http://library.creativecow.net/articles/ross_shane/slow-motion_cinema-tools/video-tutorial

If you want to export more than just the standard of two audio channels that Final Cut Pro is set up to do by default, this is the tutorial for you. The secret is in the shortcuts and critical mouse cursor placement in the sequence window.

http://library.creativecow.net/articles/ross_shane/multi-audio/video-tutorial

The last one is how to use the noise reduction tools in FCP but more importantly in Soundtrack Pro. The person who generated this tutorial uses the most popular way to reduce unwanted audio and it’s good to know how it works. I use another way that is more discreet but, as all things to do with these programs, there’s always 3 or 4 ways to do the same thing. It all depends on how you like to work.

http://library.creativecow.net/articles/mcguire_sam/soundtrack_noise-reduction/video-tutorial

Happy tutorial……ing!!

I saw some test footage from a slider from Kessler Cranes and was smitting for a slider. After talking it over with Michael Rendulic from Avinhouse, he convinced to try out a DIY (do-it-yourself) slider for a fraction of the price.

So, I read another article at Canon 5D tips I decided to give it a try and ordered two parts from Igus .

Here’s the very first shots I took with the slider. I want to make some adjustments to how it is bolted to the tripod in order to make it a bit more stable. Also have to work on the pans accross as they are a bit jerky. However, I’m confident with some tweaking and practice, it’ll be a cool inexpenive tool to add value to my video production.

It was shot on a Canon 7D, 24-70mm 2.8L lens with a ND filter on for those that are curious.

I have decided to expand my business field to include Final Cut Pro, Apple lessons and/or trouble shooting. As an introductory price, I will offer 2 hours of instruction or advice for only $60.00 (plus tax). Every hour after that first session will be $40.00. Many of the calls I’ve been fielding lately go far beyond the easy general type inquiries and that tells me that there is a need for some reasonably priced instruction.
I will of course continue to help out for free during our BCPVA meetings and on the BCPVA website.

Hey guys , some advice – would like to know what you all think

I am starting to experiement with HD as a production format becasue I had someone give me a whole bunch of HD clips as source
I used a program to downgrade them to SD for the project but I wanted to look into HD as a production format for the future

All the new HD video cameras are all using AVCHD H264 in their capture. Everything from the crappy $99 handhelds to the $5000 new Sony. I am starting to experiment with this new format and I am wondering what you guys and how you guys are doing editing with this as source footage? My system is choking on a single 1080 clip and is completely useless if I have more than one track of video. SD works fine, I can get 720P ny converting to p2 DVCPROHD and that seems to run (though not well) , but a native AVCHD file causes my NLE to barf. (premiere)

What are you (PC) guys using to cut HD footage? Are you only doing single track cutting ? Are you using offline proxy(does that work)? Are you doing 1080 editing or 720 ? What OS / CPU / RAM / Special video hardware are you running to do this?
Is multitrack HD editing possible with effects and transitions at 1080?

I am trying to figure out how is it that this is a consumer format codec that ships with $99 cameras for mom and dad
to film their kids birthday party seems to require a $9000 workstation with specialized hardware to cut properly

Any input would be helpful
