BCPVA Online Meeting – April 28th/20 – Lock Down Survival & Strategy for the Rebuild

Hello Members & Guests;

Coming up fast is our second online meeting, this month moderated discussion about how you & your business can survive the Covid-19 lock down, and prosper once conditions improve and also a fun invitation to share a short video about your lock down experience with the rest of us!

Moderated Group Discussion
When it comes to the negative economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown some of the most heavily affected are Canadians owning small businesses or working as contractors. Thankfully, there are some government programs that can at least partially support us, and fortunately most of us are not saddled with heavy business debt & lease obligations.

That we need to take care of ourselves & our families, & understand how we can make use of these programs is clear. What is not clear is how video production environment will look once things stabilize and the economy begins to re-open. Some of the opportunities in our market may diminish, but we can be sure new opportunities will abound. Our discussion will serve as a point of inspiration to get us all thinking hard about how we will anticipate these shifts, work at creating a “back to business” plan, and utilizing the extra time we currently have to develop the new skills we think will help us leverage the opportunities. Please join us!

Discussion topics will include …

  • Updates on the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB).
  • Structuring our lockdown lives to support our health & family well being.
  • Potential new video production opportunities as the economy reopens.
  • Marketing strategies for new business opportunities.
  • Learning new post-production skills

Your Assignment

For this zoom session we also have a fun assignment for you. You probably have not been shooting and editing for a while so…Your assignment is to produce a 2 to 3 minute video, showing us your lock down paradise or hell. Low bit rate please! We will share these in our April 28 session from your device using Zoom’s share feature.

Meeting Details

People can start joining the meeting at 6:45 pm, and the meeting will start at 7 pm. If you have never used Zoom before, please join early to download and troubleshoot.

How it will work: You can connect with both Windows and Mac computers / laptops, Apple and Android cell phones, and tablets with the Zoom video app. This link will give you a prompt to download and run Zoom if you have never used Zoom before. If you have used Zoom, it will open a box with Zoom Meetings highlighted – click the Open Link button. When you connect you can test your headphones, webcam, and microphone with Zoom, before you join the talk.

Audio: This is the most important part.  We want/need to avoid feedback -so wear headphones. If members don’t wear headphones, the audio from everyone else will feed into their microphone and this can cause a feedback loop.

Microphone: Most laptops and mobile devices have built-in microphones (and webcams).  These will work just fine. Your mobile devices likely shipped with headphones with a built-in microphone – this works great too.  If you have and headphones with three rings on the connector then your headphones have a microphone built-in.  If you are using an external USB webcam, then it probably has a microphone too.  If you haven’t used it in a while, you may want to plug it in and possibly update the driver.

Webcam: If you are joining with a mobile device then take the time to mount your device on a stand at eye level.  The same basics that apply to videography apply to webcam usage: add some soft front-light, avoid back-light, and be aware what is in your background.
